REQUIREMENTS TO TAKE UP EDUCATION (EU-Citizens)

In order to start the 3 year vocational education as a state-approved „Geriatric nurse"  you need:

  • a high-school diploma or
  • another recognized equivalent in education or
  • ten years of schooling of general school education
  • a secondary school and a degree in a at least two years vocational training
  • a secondary school and the completion of a recognized training in nursing assistance or elderly care assistance or
  • another completed ten years of general school education

Non –EU citizens need a visa to enter Germany, a resident permit to stay in the country and a work permit in order to work.

TRAINING CONTENTS

The dual three-year vocational training as a “geriatric nurse” is a nationally standardized regulated training, it has a duration of 3 years. It can possibly be shortened due to another nursing education. The theoretical training takes place at vocational schools for elderly care and the practical on-the-job training is conducted at old people’s care facilities. The training ends after three years with the state examination, which consists of a written, oral and practical part.

The prerequisites for entering the training are: - 10 years of school (in Germany “Realschulabschluss”) or - 9 years of school (in Germany “Hauptschulabschluss”) plus completion of a 2 years vocational training or – 9 years of school (in Germany “Hauptschulabschluss”) plus completion of a vocational training in the care sector.

The training includes theoretical and practical classes at a eldery people nursing school as well as practical training at a old people's nursing home or outpatient nursing homes. Theoretical and practical training alternate with each other and week-long blocks, but the practical training is preponderant.

The main contents of the training are: personal and situational care of people, medical diagnostik and treatment planning, use of IT-applications in the elderly care, support of elderly people in structuring their day and daily activities, consulting, quaity assurance in the elderly care, palliative care, health promotion and nutrition.

COSTS FOR EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Trainees are entitled to receive a training allowance. Since there is no generally binding collective agreement in the elderly care, the allowances can be different depending on the institution where the practical training takes place. Mostly it differs according to the year of training.
Different salaries are paid in training, monthly between 500 and 1000 EUR. The amount depends on collective agreements.
