The Elderly Care Sector in Romania

The Romanian population undergoes an accelerated aging process. Statistics show that 81% of private home care providers and 47% of public services encountered high demands from older persons and their families for this type of social and medical services in the last two years. 20% of the older population need home care, but only 0,23% receive medical or social care. The state is reluctant in developing new home care services for older persons, although this type of services is 11 times cheaper than residential care. Moreover, at least 100 000 persons from rural or urban areas who do not have other working options could benefit from the implementation of home care services in order to get qualifications and find employment.
