The qualification “Betreuungskraft /§87b” has been newly created by the “German Act on the further development of care” (2008) in order to face the increasing care needs of people with dementia-related incapacities or other mental impairments. The role of the “geriatric care helper according to §87b” consists primarily in the motivation of the dementia-affected persons living in senior residences, for instance: painting and crafting, light gardening work, cooking and baking, listening to music, making music and singing, reading and storytelling, taking them for walks and excursions or to motion exercises, dancing or to cultural or sport events.
The training is regulated by law and consists of a qualification with a total of 240 hours. The training is based on three modules: a 5 days internship as orientation, a basic course about care work in nursing homes (100 hours), a 2 weeks internship, an advanced course about care work in nursing homes (60 hours).

Social skills are very important. These include communication skills, the ability to empathize and a positive attitude towards people with a mental illness. In addition, a high degree of reliability, teamwork and resilience is of advantage.
